我們平時(shí)所說(shuō)的萬(wàn)圣節(jié)(All Hallow's Day)，其實(shí)是萬(wàn)圣節(jié)前夜(Halloween)，即10月31日，11月1日才是萬(wàn)圣節(jié)。
萬(wàn)圣節(jié)前夜又被叫做 “All Hallow E'en”, “The Eve of All Hallows”, “Hallow e'en”, 或者 “The eve of All Saintas'Day”。后來(lái)約定俗成被叫做 “Halloween”。
萬(wàn)圣節(jié)前夜是西方國(guó)家的傳統(tǒng)節(jié)日，這一夜是一年中最“鬧鬼”的一夜，所以也叫“鬼節(jié)”。話說(shuō)我們中國(guó)也有“鬼節(jié)”呢，即農(nóng)歷七月十四的盂蘭節(jié)(Hungry Ghost Festival)，俗稱中元節(jié)。
在萬(wàn)圣節(jié)前夜，小孩子們都開(kāi)心的不得了，等了一年的“不請(qǐng)吃就搗蛋”(Trick or treat) 呀!夜幕降臨，孩子們便迫不及待地穿上五顏六色(multi-colored) 的化妝服，戴上千奇百怪的面具(all sorts of strange masks)，提上一盞“杰克燈(jack-o'lantern)”跑出去挨家挨戶的要糖、小點(diǎn)心或者零錢。小氣的人家就要倒霉了，小搗蛋鬼們 (trouble maker)會(huì)在門把手涂上肥皂，有時(shí)還把他們的貓涂上顏色。出國(guó)留學(xué)網(wǎng)
現(xiàn)在，“Trunk or treat”似乎更加流行，在指定停車場(chǎng)(parking lot)，家長(zhǎng)們會(huì)把車布置成各種有趣、漂亮的主題，準(zhǔn)備好零食，等待孩子們的“搗亂”。
由于萬(wàn)圣夜臨近蘋果的豐收期，“咬蘋果”(Apple Biting) 也成了萬(wàn)圣節(jié)前夜很流行的游戲。游戲時(shí)，大人們讓蘋果漂浮在裝滿水的盆里，然后讓孩子們?cè)诓挥檬值臈l件下用嘴去咬蘋果，誰(shuí)先咬到，誰(shuí)就是優(yōu)勝者。 另外焦糖蘋果(caramel apple, toffee apple)，熱蘋果西打(cider)，粟米糖(candy corn)，烘南瓜子(pumpkin seed) 等也是受歡迎的應(yīng)節(jié)食品。
