Level Required for Acceptance
Since many required reading texts are written in English, proficiency in the English language is an admission requirement to the Hebrew University. This requirement applies to applicants for undergraduate, graduate and supplementary programs as well as those with the status of "Special Students".

English “Basic” level is the minimum language requirement for admission to most departments at the undergraduate level. Students are required to reach exemption level before advancing to the second year. This might necessitate a summer course.

English Exemption level is required for admission to the undergraduate program in English. Applicants that achieved Upper Advanced level according to the test, may be conditionally accepted and will need to meet the required score before the beginning of the academic year.

Examinations for Determining Level
English proficiency is measured by the English language subsection of the Psychometric Test, the NITE Amir or Amiram Test (computerized Amir).
Applicants will be exempt from the study of English if they completed a full course of study at an institution where the language of instruction is English or a degree program in English Language and/or Literature or if they have a grade of 7 in English A at Higher Grade on the IB.

Amir/Amiram Test
The Amir Test is under the supervision of the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation. Registration is done online,or by submitting forms that can be purchased at the Academon bookstores on campus or directly from the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation.

Submission of Other Test Scores
Candidates who are abroad or who cannot take the Amir/Amiram test in time, may submit their score on the TOEFL or IELTS (academic format) or European Common Reference Level. The TOEFL score report must be submitted direct from the ETS. The Hebrew University code is 0206.
It is also possible to submit an official certificate of English level according to the European Common Reference levels.

English Language Courses
Students must reach Exemption level by the beginning of second-year studies. English language studies on the “Upper Advanced” level taken during the first year of undergraduate studies do not require payment of an additional fee.

Students who must study both Hebrew and English in their first year of studies are usually not able to carry a full course load.
