    二、新加坡國(guó)立大學(xué)的歷史
    
    We started out as a modest medical school with 23 students in 1905, founded by a determined group of businessmen led by Tan Jiak Kim, to serve the needs of the local community. Today, more than 100 years on, as Singapore’s flagship university, we continue to be in service of country and society.
    1905: The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School is established.
    1913: The School is renamed King Edward VII Medical School, making it the first institution of higher learning in Singapore.
    1921: The status of the Medical School is elevated to become King Edward VII College of Medicine.
    1928: Raffles College is established to provide tertiary education in the arts and sciences.
    1949: Raffles College merges with King Edward VII College of Medicine to form the University of Malaya, the very first university for the peoples of Singapore and the Federation of Malaya.
    1955: Nanyang University, a privately funded Chinese university, opens its doors.
    1962: The Singapore campus of the University of Malaya becomes an autonomous institution known as the University of Singapore.
    1980: The National University of Singapore is established with the merger of the University of Singapore and Nanyang University.

    1.Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
    Founded in 1929, FASS is one of the the largest faculties in the National University of Singapore, encompassing 16 Departments with a wide range of academic offerings in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Asian Studies and Language Studies. Together with our special programmes (such as Double Degree opportunities, special degrees with overseas partners, concurrent degrees, our FASStrack Asia Summer School, and a wide range of overseas Student Exchange Programme opportunities), FASS offers one of the most comprehensive and enriching educational experiences globally. FASS has a long tradition of teaching excellence, with many teaching award winners bringing their enthusiasm and experience directly to students in our classrooms.
    While our Faculty comprises a wide variety of disciplines and area studies, all share the common goals of asking challenging questions, communicating with clarity, and learning from the perspectives of others. We truly believe that such inquiry is fundamental to our understanding of and the betterment of humanity. Our aim is to equip our students with the skills of critical thinking, writing, research, and problem-solving that are valuable to any organisation and industry, to meet the challenges of the fast-changing world we live in today.
    As a large and comprehensive faculty, FASS is advancing research in a number of key areas, particularly in the study of Asia. Amongst our many areas of research excellence, we have strengths in research on population and demography, families, ageing, health, and cities. Having such a breadth and depth of research strengths mean that FASS can offer excellent guidance for our graduate students in the wide range of topics that interest them, again with particular richness in Asia research. At the graduate level, too, we are distinguished by special programmes such as the Comparative Asian Studies Ph.D programme, and the Joint Ph.D with King’s College London. Undergraduates also benefit in terms of our Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme, which allows them to work directly with top researchers on their current research projects.
    The quality of an institution is perhaps best seen in the alumni it produces.     2.Faculty of Engineering
    NUS Engineering’s mission is to nurture Engineer-Leaders with a global perspective and to lead in technology through high-impact research. Celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2015, the Faculty has contributed substantially to the rapid industrial and economic growth of the nation while continuing to contribute to a knowledge-based economy.
    Professional engineering education started in 1955, with classes held at the Singapore campus of the University of Malaya. Two years later, a four-year diploma course was set up at the Singapore Polytechnic when the Department of Engineering moved to Kuala Lumpur. It became a four-year Bachelor of Engineering course in 1964.
    NUS Engineering was established in the National University of Singapore (NUS) with the merger in 1980 between the University of Singapore and Nanyang University. The largest of fourteen faculties and schools at NUS, the Faculty has grown from 300 students in the late 1970s to close to 10,000 strong today. Today, we are a vibrant community with ten departments and programmes:

    In tandem with ongoing enhancements to the existing curriculum, NUS Engineering has also introduced a new learning pathway with design as its central focus. Known as Innovation & Design-Centric Programme (iDCP), it was offered from Academic Year 2009/10. Also introduced was the Global Engineering Programme (GEP), which caters to top students of each cohort, providing them with the opportunity to accelerate their programme and receive a Bachelor of Engineering degree from NUS, and a graduate engineering degree from a partner university, all within four year.
    With an increasing international student and staff population, the Faculty has developed into a truly cosmopolitan environment for tertiary education, emphasising both fundamentals and applications.

    The National University of Singapore Faculty of Law is widely regarded as Asia’s leading law school. Staffed by an outstanding permanent faculty diverse in origin and qualifications, NUS Law is dedicated to building a vibrant community and creating an environment that facilitates critical thinking and reflection on the fundamental legal issues confronting our interconnected world.
    Located in Singapore, which for more than a century has been a commercial hub at the crossroads of Asia, NUS Law is very much Asia’s Global Law School. Since 1957 our curriculum has been infused with perspectives from other jurisdictions and disciplines. This tradition has accelerated in recent years, providing a legal education that is comparative, international, and multi-disciplinary. The Law School hosts many visiting faculty and students from every continent, offering a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere both inside and outside the classroom.
    The strength of the NUS Law curriculum lies in the broad and diverse range of subjects it offers.     4.School of Public Health
    As Singapore’s first and only full-fledged public health tertiary education institution, the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore, builds upon more than 60 years of experience in research, training and practice to continually foster healthier communities in Singapore and the region through its translational cross-disciplinary research work on cohort studies and lifecourse epidemiology, infectious disease research, health technology assessments, health promotion, workplace health and safety, health systems evaluation and health services research, to impact public health programmes and policies.
    The School actively collaborates with many partners including the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Harvard School of Public Health and University of Michigan School of Public Health.
    The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, the School’s flagship programme, attracts students from a wide range of disciplines from within Singapore and throughout the region.
    SSHSPH is also a member of the National University Health System (NUHS), the first academic medical centre in Singapore. As part of NUHS, SSHSPH works closely with the National University Hospital in hospital-based health services and primary care research.
