二、香港大學的歷史
The Early Years
The University of Hong Kong (or HKU, as it is familiarly known to students, staff and alumni) is the oldest tertiary education institution in Hong Kong.
On March 16, 1910, Sir Frederick Lugard, the then Governor of Hong Kong, laid the foundation stone for the University.
The University was first incorporated in Hong Kong as a self-governing body of scholars by the University Ordinance on March 30, 1911.
On March 11, 1912, the University was officially opened, and Arts, Engineering and Medicine would become its first Faculties. The Faculty of Medicine evolved from the Hong Kong College of Medicine, founded in 1887. Of the College's early alumni, the most renowned was Dr Sun Yat-sen, often regarded as the founder of modern China.
In December 1916, the University held its first congregation, with just 23 graduates.
It was ten years after the founding of HKU that women students were admitted for the first time.
In 1937, Queen Mary Hospital opened and has served as the University's teaching hospital since then. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, which would bring academic activities to a halt, there were four Faculties - Arts, Engineering, Medicine, and Science.
After 1945, the University underwent structural developments as post-war reconstruction efforts began in earnest.

1910年3月16日，時任香港總督的弗雷德里克盧吉爵士提議建立香港大學。
根據1911年3月30日香港大學條例，香港大學最先以自治的學者團體形式并入香港。
1912年3月11日，香港大學正式開放，文學院、工學院和醫(yī)學院成為它的第一批學院。醫(yī)學院的前身是創(chuàng)辦于1887年的香港醫(yī)學院。在醫(yī)學院早期校友中，最著名的當數(shù)孫中山。他常被認為是現(xiàn)代中國之父。
1916年12月，香港大學舉行第一屆畢業(yè)典禮，當時只有23名畢業(yè)生。
香港大學建校十年之后才開始招收女學生。
1937年瑪麗女王醫(yī)院開放，自從以后一直作為香港大學的教學醫(yī)院。二戰(zhàn)前夕，香港大學有了四個學院，分別是文學院、工學院、醫(yī)學院和理學院。二戰(zhàn)則使學校的學術活動中止。
1945年之后，香港大學像經歷了結構性的發(fā)展，戰(zhàn)后重建工作堅定不移地展開。
From Post-War to the New Millennium
The study of architecture was first introduced to the University in 1951.
In response to the demands of a rapidly changing society, a Department of Extra-Mural Studies was established in 1956 to provide continuing adult education.
In 1961, when the University celebrated its golden jubilee, it had more than 2,000 students, four times greater than in 1941.
The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1967, and the Law Department in 1969.
In 1982, the Faculty of Dentistry, based at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, was established. It remains Hong Kong’s only faculty for training dental professionals.
In 1984, both Architecture and Education became fully-fledged faculties, and in the same year a separate Law Faculty was created. The University’s tenth faculty, the Faculty of Business and Economics, was established in 2001.
In 1992, the Department of Extra-Mural Studies became the School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) and remains Hong Kong's largest tertiary-level institution for continuing education.
In 2011, the Centennial College was established by the University of Hong Kong as an independent college offering self-financed degrees accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.
戰(zhàn)后到新世紀
建筑專業(yè)于1951年首次被引入香港大學。
為了滿足快速變化的社會需求，課外課程部于1956年成立，旨在提供成人繼續(xù)教育。
1961年，香港大學慶祝建校五十周年。這個時候學生人數(shù)已超過2千，是1941年學生人數(shù)的四倍。
社科學院成立于1967年，法學系成立于1969年。
1982年，以菲利普王子牙科醫(yī)院為基地的牙科學院成立。它也是香港大學僅有的用于培訓牙科專業(yè)人員的學院。
1984年，建筑學院和教育學院羽翼豐滿，同年，單獨的法學院成立。香港大學的第十個學院商務與經濟學院成立于2001年。
1992年，課外課程部成長為職業(yè)與繼續(xù)教育學院，一直是香港大學在高等教育階段規(guī)模最大的繼續(xù)教育機構。
2011年，Centennial College成立。它是一個獨立的提供私費學位的學院。私費學位得到香港學術和職業(yè)資格認證委員會認證。
