讀者 Michael 問：溺斃英文是 drown，但遇溺而不死，最后逃過大難又如何表達？
英文 drown 這個字是淹死之意，遇溺而不斃，英文沒有特別一個字，只可以在前面加一個 almost，如：He almost drowned but the lifeguard came just in time.
或者可以用 continuous tense，如：He was drowning when the lifeguard pulled him out of the water.
說一個人在水中掙扎，英文是 flounder。Thrash 和 flail 都可以，但這兩個字也可以用在其他的情況，不只限于水中。水深過頭時，人就是 submerge in water，也可以說 out of one's depth。后者更可作為比喻，來形容人遇到超出自己能力所能應(yīng)付的情況。
譬如說：某人剛從大學法律系畢業(yè)，第一件處理的案件就千頭萬緒，不知從可入手，只得向上司請示。
Finding herself out of her depths, she asked for her senior's advice on the new case.
