英文中有一個十分有趣的習語，叫做sleep on，較粗心的人一看便以為是“睡在上面”的意思將句子譯錯。我們不妨舉個例子：
We asked Judy if she would join our club and she answered that she would sleep on it.
這總不會是睡在上面吧。其實sleep on是“推遲做出決定”的意思，一件事情決定不下，先把它放下，美美的睡上一覺再說，說不定到時候就有了好主意了呢。再如：
We will have to sleep on your invitation until we know whether we will be free Monday night.
這個意思很明顯了吧，就是“我們先看看星期一晚上有沒有空，到時再考慮能否赴你的約。”
