    艾里克。帕特里奇先生(Mr. Eric Partridge)認(rèn)為,這個(gè)成語(yǔ)大約從1770年開(kāi)始就作為貶義詞使用。英國(guó)《朗曼英國(guó)成語(yǔ)詞典》等辭書(shū),認(rèn)為這個(gè)成語(yǔ)源自 維多利亞女王時(shí)代(1835——1901),英國(guó)數(shù)學(xué)家和童話作家劉易斯。卡洛爾(Lewis Carroll,1832——1898)在他所寫(xiě)的童話《阿麗思漫游奇境記》(Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)中詳細(xì)的描述了公爵夫人家中的一只柴郡貓?!栋Ⅺ愃悸纹婢秤洝返?章有段這樣的對(duì)話:"Please,would you tell me,"said Alice a little limidly……"why your cat grins like that?" "It's a Cheshire cat,"said the Duchess,"and that's why."卡洛爾的童話,通過(guò)虛幻離奇的情節(jié),嘲諷了19世紀(jì)后半期英國(guó)的社會(huì)現(xiàn)象。《阿麗思漫游奇境記》在1865年7月問(wèn)世后,轟動(dòng)了 全英國(guó)。作者由此一舉成名?!安窨へ垺钡纳鷦?dòng)想象,是否他所創(chuàng)造,有待于進(jìn)一步考證,但to grin like a Cheshire cat是隨著該書(shū)的風(fēng)行而被廣泛使用,應(yīng)無(wú)疑義。根據(jù)書(shū)中的描述,這個(gè)成語(yǔ)常用來(lái)表示to grin broadly,showing great amusement; to laugh at nothing that is amusing;to smile widely,in such a way that on shows all one's teeth. eg:Poor little Hans only grinned like a Cheshire cat when he was scolded.
