M: Excuse me, Madam. I'd like to choose some flowers to send to my teacher.
W:Let's see. These fresh roses are very nice.
    (Text 2)
M: Do you mind if I look at your notebook?
W:No, of course not. It's on the dining table.
    (Text 3)
W: It' s already 9:00. I wonder if Tom will come.
M:We are supposed to be here at 8:30. He told me he would start at 8:00.
W: Maybe something is wrong with him.
    (Text 4)
M: Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the Grand Hotel? I thought it was on this corner but I seem to have made a mistake.
W: Hmm. I'm sorry. Maybe you should try calling them.
    (Text 5)
M: I'm still waiting for the clerk to come back and make some copies of this paper for me.
W:Why trouble him? I'll show you how easy it is to work the machine.
    (Text 6)
W: Good afternoon, Dr. Anderson's office.
M: Hello, my name is John Cremer, and I was hoping I could come in today to see the doctor.
W: Are you a patient of Doctor Anderson?
M: Well, no. I'm in town at a conference and the manager of the hotel where I am staying suggested that I call you.
W:What seems to be the problem?
M:Well, I got this ringing in my ears.
W: The doctor will be busy at the hospital until this evening. So the earliest you could see him would be tomorrow morning at ten.
M:I'll come in then if that's OK.
    (Text 7)
W: What a great day, don't you think?
M: I guess so. I didn't notice. I feel terrible because I watched television until after midnight last night.
W: After midnight! Did you watch so late because you were bored? I usually watch TV only if I have nothing better to do.
M: Bored? No, I was unhappy because I left my meal tickets in the dining room. There's more than fifty dollars worth of meal tickets lost.
W: So, did watching TV make you feel better?
M: Well, I felt a bit better while I was watching. You know, it took my mind off my troubles. But after I turned the TV off, I just felt even worse with myself for wasting so much time.
W: I've had that feeling before.
    (Text 8)
M: Jane! Imagine seeing you here.
W:Bob! Glad to see you too. I haven't seen you for ages.
M: You know, I've been hoping to get hold of you. Would you be able to come over this Friday? My sister just returned from a trip to Canada. She'll be staying with us for a few days. I thought you two might like to get to know each other since you two are both botanists.
W:Oh! I'd love to. But I can't. I have to go up to my younger brother's graduation on Friday right after work. It takes four hours to get to Seattle, you know.
M: Stattle? I thought you were from Portland.
W:No,I just lived there for a few years.
M:Well,it's really too bad you can't make it. When my sister was in Canada, she spent the whole time taking pictures of plants. I can't believe how good some of them are.
W: Is there any chance that you could ask her to stay around for a little bit longer? I'll be getting back early Sunday.
M: I doubt whether we can get her to stay much longer. She is busy.
W: Well, if I can't get hold of ber this time, maybe I'll have to wait till the next time she comes around.
    (Text 9)
M: Hi, Judy. How about helping me carry some of these books back to the house, can you? If I try and do it myself ,I think I'll break my arms.
W:Wow, where did you get so many books —rob a librarian? Oh no, don't tell me you are going to open a bookstore.
M: Very funny. I was at the bookstore the whole day. After Chirstmas many books that were not popular were on sale. And I picked up so many really interesting ones. Take a look.
W: "Speak Chinese", "Introduction to Aisa""Arts and Culture". Are you planning to get a job in Asia?
M: Well, they are all interesting but I bought these books because they were worth the money . I couldn't afford them if they were new. If you help me carry them I'll let you have one.
W: I'd certainly like to pick one. Now let me help you.
