唐朝劉禹錫有一首《浪淘沙》：「莫道讒言如浪深，莫言遷客似沙沉。千淘萬漉（過濾）雖辛苦，吹盡狂沙始到金?！箍裆橙ケM即是沉冤得雪，用英文來說，就是pan out well（有好結果）了。
按panout本來是淘金用語。淘金者用淘金盆（pan）把沙礫洗掉，叫做pan out the sand——這里的pan字作動詞用。由于必須淘盡狂沙才可以知道淘金結果，所以，panout后來也引伸為「結果是……」的意思，例如：Nobody can tell how the negotiations will pan out（誰都不知道談判會有甚么結果）。
至于事情的結果好不好（how things pan out）,可以用well、badly、allright等字來形容，例如：The negotiations panned out badly for us（談判結果對我們很不利）。
