Who's Dave? If you take into consideration Nora's pronunciation of 'th' sounds, then “Dave” is “they've” - “They've moved around a lot”! Also, when Nora clips her word endings in “try” and “ignore”, it makes the words sound like the present tense. She should pronounce the 'd' - “tried”, “ignored”。
First thing in the morning at HotDotCom……
Jane: Morning, Nora!
Nora: Morning, Jane. Oh, you look very smart this morning. Where you off?
Jane: I've been asked to speak at a seminar. It's at the Training Unit of the Small Hotels Association. Can you tell me how to get there?
Nora: It's very easy. Leave the building, turn off at the next exit, go right past the new bungalows. It's right next to the Korean Steamboat - the one with the black and white chiks.
Jane: That sounds simple enough. What about the Training Unit. Is it easy to find?
Nora: Yes - very. The seminar rooms are on the first floor. Just ring the unit when you get there and they'll open for you.
Jane: Don't you think someone will be there to welcome me? …… Thanks, anyway - see you this afternoon.
Later that morning. Jaya answers his phone……
Jaya: Good morning HotDotCom. How can I……
Jane is on the line. She sounds worried……
Jane: I can't find the place. I went past the bungalows, but there's no boat anywhere to be seen - and we're miles away from the water - I can see some signs with ducks, but no chicks.
Jaya: Oh dear! I think Nora might have misled you. You should have turned right at the bungalows - detached houses to you - and the Steamboat isn't a boat at all. It's a Korean restaurant. It's in an old terraced building with black-and-white striped bamboo blinds.
Jane: Oh no. That means I'm not in the right place at all. I'm going to be late now!
A little later. Jane calls back again……
Jaya: Good morning. Hot……
Jane: There's nothing but shops on the first floor. I keep ringing the main number but there's no-one there.
Nora overhears……
Nora: Who is it, Jaya?
Jaya: It's Jane. She seems to have found the building, but not the seminar rooms.
Narrator: In fact, Jane could be right outside the office and not realise it. This is because Nora didn't know that some ordinary, everyday words can mean different things in different countries. 'Chicks' for instance are fluffy baby chickens to Jane! And what about this:

Jane: There's nothing but shops on the first floor.
Narrator: Floor numbers can mislead visitors to Singapore! In Singapore we start numbering from 1. This is what they do in America too, but in many European countries they start numbering with the ground floor. So Jane must have been looking for the seminar rooms on the second floor.
And why did Jane make a telephone call instead of simply ringing the doorbell? Well, because of what Nora had told her:
Replay……
Nora: Just ring the unit when you get there and they'll open for you.
Jane: Don't you think someone will be there to welcome me?
Narrator: Jane doesn't recognise that in Singapore a unit means premises. She thinks Nora is talking about the Training Unit.
Nora also said “they'll open for you”, so Jane thinks that the place is closed and that she has to call someone out to open the premises up. What would you have said here, Jaya?
Jaya: Mmm…… Their premises are on the first floor - that means street level. When you get there, ring the bell and someone will let you in.
Narrator: And we'll be here tomorrow with another Speak Good English lesson. So goodbye until then.
