advance 指"向某一目標或方向前進的運動或效果， 并常強調(diào)前進的終點"， 如：
Our soldiers advanced bravely against the enemy.

promote 作"提升"解時可與advance 通用； 它強調(diào)"促使某種事業(yè)向前發(fā)展以達到預期的結(jié)果， 并側(cè)重于對該人或事物（尤指公開性質(zhì)）的贊助和鼓勵"， 如：
John was promoted [advanced] from a clerk to a manager.
