Israel Prepares for Ground Offensive in Southern Lebanon
Israel is pounding targets across Lebanon for a 10th day as it prepares an expected ground invasion of southern Lebanon. Israel's foreign ministry spokesman said Friday ground incursions are necessary if Israel is to neutralize the missile threat from Hezbollah. Senior Israeli military commanders say ground operations in south Lebanon will increase in the coming days.
The Israeli army has called up thousands of military reservists, and Israeli planes dropped leaflets over southern Lebanon warning civilians to move north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the Israeli border. In Beirut, Lebanon's defense minister said the Lebanese army will defend the country's borders if Israel invades.
Hezbollah militants has fired more rockets at several Israeli towns and the port city of Haifa. Medics in Haifa say at least 10 Israelis were wounded. Israeli jets Friday struck several areas in southern Lebanon, near Beirut and the eastern Bekaa Valley.
