Despite the economic downturn, it seems the world’s richest are only getting richer. Forbes’ 2013 billionaires list is out today, and shows that business tycoons are getting wealthier compared to a year earlier. Although the economic environment is still tough, from Europe to the U.S. to Asia, some entrepreneurs not only survived in the crisis, but made the most of it.
The one thousand 426 billionaires in the latest list collectively hold 5.4 trillion U.S. dollars in net assets, higher than last year’s 4.6 trillion dollars. Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim Helu and his family topped the list for the fourth straight year, with a net worth of 73 billion dollars. Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Inditex fashion mogul Amancio Ortega - that’s the man behind Zara- they came in second and the third respectively. Warren Buffett fell out of the top-three, but still managed fourth this year. 10 Chinese entrepreneurs also appeared in the list.
Li Ka-shing, founder of Cheung Kong Holdings in Hong Kong, occupied eighth position, making him the richest Chinese in the world. Zong Qinghou, chairman of beverage giant Wahaha, climbed to 86 in the list, and now is the richest man on the Chinese Mainland.
