What if you could own only 10 things in life By Martha Stewart, host of the nationally syndicated Martha Stewart Show
My 10 choices, in no particular order:
1. Every man's library. If I can't have much, at least this will keep me busy. This collection has all the classics, as well as works by contemporary authors such as Joan Didion and Margaret Atwood. The founder, Joseph Dent, once said, “With 100 volumes a man may be intellectually rich for life.” To me, that seems like a good place to start.
2. Google. Well, that's about everything right there, between Google and the library. I'd have all the information I'd ever need.
3. Lemons. I can go without wine, but not without lemons. They are so useful in the kitchen, both for cooking and for cleaning.
4. Eggs. They are the most perfect food.
5. Olive oil. Really great olive oil is a must. Whenever I travel, I always pick up new bottles to try. The best olive oils should be cold-pressed, made with handpicked olives.
6. Electricity. I used to spend weekends at a cabin in the Berkshires that had no running water or electricity. We lived like the Colonists! It was fun for a while, but now I want electricity on the short list. Kerosene lamps are frightening to use on a daily basis.
7. My house in Maine. Skylands, as I call it, is just beautiful. I have everything right there, including my garden and a great view of the ocean. I definitely want it.
8. My best friend. It's hard to pick just one. Whoever my best friend is that day, I'll take her along. Of course, my doggies are really the best. Maybe I'll bring one of them.
9. Marine lotion. It's fantastic. If you haven't tried it, you really have to. Susan Cimineli makes a great one. You put it on after a shower, and it's better than moisturizer—it's the new perfume.
10. Access to the ocean and it's contents. Since I'll be at Skylands, I can go down to the beach every day. The ocean is so rich in wonderful things: sea salt, lobster, beautiful shells. Who knows that might float ashore. Buried treasure? A message in a bottle?
