Winter is the best time of year to test one's will. Some of us are conditioned to polish our daily routines, unwilling to make a move bold and swift. It's as if we are bears hibernating deep in the cave. Unless someone comes over and drags us away, we are simply content with the ease and comfort the cozy yet dark cave affords us. Sometimes, that someone even resorts to brute force either to hit hard on the forehead of the sleeping beasts, or to kick right in the asses. Who is this "someone"? Who is this anti-ursine creature? In fact, that someone is us, or rather he or she lies within us.
There are two layers of existence permeating our life. One is the social self, the other is the essential self. The social self is the bear. When it is spring or summer, bears would come out and seek food. They are ferocious and intimidating, but their existence is earthbound and largely aimless. Sometimes they overfeed themselves with luscious prey. Other times the bears go without food. The bear life is only a happenstance, something beyond the bear's control. So they just have to wait and see. The "have to" part is all there is to a bear-kind of life. Being bears is easy, but not quite exciting and fulfilling!
The essential self is the eagle in us. That eagle might be a hatchling, or simply snuggling inside the shell. However, the truth is, we do have the eagle and once we are conscious of our bear existence, we go beyond it. The eagle soars into the sky. The key word for eagles is "sharp"--sharp eyes, sharp talons, sharp wit. However, the dim-witted bear will resist the sharp eagle, pushing the eagle backward to its shell. Yet the shell is broken and once the eagle has the urge to soar, it will never consent to creep.
Is the eagle in your heart alive?
Is the eagle aware of its genius of flying?
Is the eagle strong enough to challenge the bear?
