I'm sure some of you like arithmetic very much.
我敢肯定你們中有些人非常喜歡算術(shù)。
Perhaps it's your favourite subject.
也許這是一門你們喜歡的科目。
But I'm certain some of you don't like it at all.
但是我也知道你們中有些人一點(diǎn)都不喜歡算術(shù)。
Perhaps you do sums because you have to do them!
也許你們做算術(shù)是因?yàn)槟銈儾坏貌蛔觥?BR> Can you add DCCLXVII and CCLVI?
你們會做 DCCLXVII加CCLVI嗎？
A Roman child couldn't do this sum.
羅馬的小孩也不會做這種算術(shù)。
He had to use a counting-board.
他必須借助計(jì)算板。
But it is a simple sum really.

Here it is in Roman numbers:

And here it is in Arabic numbers:

We don't have to use Roman numbers.

and we must thank the Arabs for this.

They gave the world simple numbers.
