新概念英語作為家喻戶曉的英文學(xué)習(xí)教材，《新概念英語》在中國經(jīng)久不衰，影響了好幾代學(xué)習(xí)者。即使以今天的角度來看，這套出版于幾十年前的教材無論是在編排體系，題材和題材，詞匯還是語法上都有出彩之處，值得各個層次的人學(xué)習(xí)。
1.One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statue of Liberty, was presented to… by the people of France. 世界上最的紀(jì)念碑之一的自由女神雕像是……由法國人民贈送給……的。
(1)one of 引導(dǎo)的短語(其后面名詞要用復(fù)數(shù))與 the Statue of…為同位語。
(2)the people 通常指某個國家的人民，指復(fù)數(shù)的“人們”時通常不用 the：
It was officially presented to the American people by Bartholdi.
它由巴索爾地正式贈送給美國人民。
He never pays attention to what people say.
他從不在乎人們會說什么。
A lot of / Few people went to their wedding.
許多/沒幾個人參加(了)他們的婚禮。
2.The actual figure was made of copper…
這座雕像的主體是用銅制成的……
made of 指用某種材料制成，并且原材料的性質(zhì)或形狀沒變，從成品可以看出其原材料。
3.it was taken to pieces，它被拆成若干小塊。
take…to pieces 為固定短語，表示“把……拆開/拆散”：
When the machine broke down again, some mechanics took it to pieces.
當(dāng)那臺機(jī)器再次出毛病時，一些新概念師便把它拆開了。
This machine is too large to be transported in whole. It has to be taken to pieces first.
這臺機(jī)器太大了，無法整個地運(yùn)送，得把它先拆開。
4.the statue had been put together again，這座雕像被重新組裝起來。
put… together 為固定短語(是take…to pieces的反義詞)，表示“把……裝配/組合起來”：
They managed to put the machine together.
他們設(shè)法把那臺機(jī)器組裝了起來。
I can't put the broken vase together.
我無法把那打碎的花瓶重新拼起來。
5.to make their homes in America，在美國安家落戶。make one's home 表示“定居”、“居住”：
Ian (has) left England and made his home in China.
伊恩已離開英國，并在中國安了家。
