    1.Pupils of the school, old and new, will be sending him a present to mark the occasion.為了紀念這個日子,學校的學生——無論老同學還是新聞學——將送他一件禮物。
    (1)old and new為pupils的非限定性定語,因為有逗號把它與句子的其他成分隔開,并且去掉它對句子的意義影響不大。有時這種兩個連用的形容詞(或分詞)相當于狀語,這時它可以位于句子中間,也可以位于句首:
    The workers, thirsty and tired, took a rest under the trees.
    工人們又渴又累,在樹底下休息了一會兒。(thirsty and tired可以換到句首,相當于狀語)
    The villagers here, young and old, are interested in gardening.
    這里的村民們,無論年輕的還是年長的,都對園藝感興趣。
    (2)mark本義為“給……作記號/留痕跡”,在這里表示“紀念”:
    He marked all the foods which were forbidden with a red pencil.
    他用紅筆標出所有禁吃的食物。
    2.All those who have contributed towards the gift will sign their names in a large album…所有湊錢買此禮品的人都將把自己的名字簽在一本大簽名簿上……
    (1)contribute通常與to/towards連用,表示“捐給”、“提供給”:
    Before his death, he contributed a large sum of money to the church.
    他在臨死前捐了一大筆錢給教會。
    A few of us contributed towards Mary's present on her birthday.
    瑪麗生日那天,我們當中的幾個人湊錢買了份禮物給她。
    (2)present與gift都可以表示“禮物”、“贈品”,但gift相對要正式些:
    She has just received a beautiful birthday present.
    她剛收到一份漂亮的生日禮物。
    He made a gift of £ 60, 000 to his old school.

    3.We shall all remember Mr. Page for his patience and understanding and for the kindly encouragement he gave us when we went so unwillingly to school. 我們不會忘記佩奇先生對我們既有耐心又充滿理解,也不會忘記在我們不愿去上學時他給予我們的親切鼓勵。
    (1)這個長句子的主要框架是remember sb. for stb.(因某事記住某人),介詞for有3個并列賓語:patience,understanding和encouragement,后這個賓語又帶 有自己的定語從句,定語從句又有自己的時間狀語從句。for后面跟的可以是某人的品德、特征等:
    Jeremy is remembered for his great sense of humour.

    (2)kindly在這里為形容詞,表示“仁慈的”、“和藹的”、“親切的”等,這個詞既可以作形容詞,也可以作副詞:
    She gave me a kindly smile.
    她對我友好地笑了一下。(形容詞)
    Dan kindly invited us to lunch yesterday.
    丹昨天友好地/好心地邀請我們吃午飯。(副詞)
    I greeted her and she smiled kindly.
    我向她打招呼,她親切地微微一笑。
    (3)so在這里是一種非正式的用法,表示程度,相當于very:
    This new cheese is so good!
    這新奶酪如此之好!
    You are so kind!
    你(們)太客氣了!
    4.a farewell dinner in his honour, 為他舉行的告別宴會。
    (1)farewell比goodbye要正式,可以單獨使用:Farewell!(再見!再會!一路平安!)它也可以作名詞或形容詞用:
    He said farewell to his mother and got on the plane.
    他向母親告別后便登上了飛機。(名詞)
    When Frank retired, they held a farewell party.
    弗蘭克退休時,他們開了個歡送會。(形容詞)
    (2)in sb.'s honour作定語,表示“為向某人表示敬意”、“為紀念某人”等,也可以說in honour of sb.:
    Many people attended the party in honour of the new manager.
    很多人參加了為新經理舉辦的晚會。
    This is a farewell performance in her honour.
    這是一場為她舉辦的告別演唱/演奏會。
    5.a total of,總共。
    total在這里是名詞,表示“總數(shù)”、“總額”、“合計”等:
    The money she spent on the dinner party reached a total of £200.

    6.devote oneself to,致力于,獻身于,專心于。
    Mary devotes herself to helping the poor.

    1.Out of control,(標題)失控。
    介詞短語out of可以表示“失去”、“欠缺”等:
    We are out of bread.
    我們的面包吃完了。
    Tony walked so fast that he was soon out of sight.
    托尼走得很快,不久就無影無蹤了。
    He has been out of work for two months.
    他失業(yè)兩個月了。
    The plane got out of control and crashed in the mountains.
    飛機失控后在山區(qū)墜毀。
    2.…the steering wheel came away in his hands.……方向盤脫手了。
    come away表示“脫落”、“脫離”、“脫開”等:
    When I tried to lift the suitcase, the handle came away.當我試圖提起手提箱時,把手掉了下來。
    3.Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violently into the sea.他們兩個還沒來得及意識到究竟發(fā)生了什么事情,就被猛地拋入了海里。
    hardly…when…表示“幾乎未來得及……就……”,hardly用于主句中,并且主句通常用過去完成時。(cf.第38課語法)
    4.they swam on as quickly as they could, 他們以快的速度向前游去。
    on在這里是副詞,表示“向前”:
    Walk on along this road for ten minutes and you'll see the railway station.

    I think he saw me, but he just marched on.

    5.They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle. 他們剛剛來得及游出危險區(qū),快艇就又轉究了一圈。

    use up表了“用完”、“用光”、“耗盡”:
    They have just bought a house and a car. They must have used up all their money.

    The child soon ate up the cake.

    1.A perfect alibi,(標題)極好的不在犯罪現(xiàn)場的證據(jù)。
    alibi為法律用語,含義是“不在場證明”、“當時不在場的申辯”,是可數(shù)名詞:
    Ian had an alibi/alibis for that morning.
    伊恩有那天上午不在場的證據(jù)/證明。
    與它搭配的動詞通常有offer,prove,set up等。
    2.…I was there on time.……
    我是按時到了那兒的。
    on time為固定短語,表示“準時”、“按時”(注意它與in time的區(qū)別):
    Can you arrive on time?
    你能準時到嗎?
    Tom is never on time. He always keeps other people waiting.
    湯姆從來不準時。他總是讓別人等。
    3.And you didn't notice anything unusual? 您沒有注意到有什么異常情況發(fā)生嗎?
    這是一個陳述疑問句,即它具備與陳述句同樣的基本語法結構,但用升調提問。這種句子在英語中不常用:

    I suggest(that)…在這里用于提出質疑,譯為“依我看……”、“恐怕……”:
    I suggest that he is not so honest as he looks.

    I suggest that the car crash was not accidental.
    恐怕這起汽車撞車事故不是偶然的。
    5.You see, on the morning of the murder, the 8 o'clock train did not run at all. 您看,在兇殺發(fā)生的那天早晨,8點鐘的那次車根本沒有發(fā)。
    (1)you see在口語中經常作為插入語出現(xiàn),句首、句中或句尾均可以,表示“你知道”、“事實上”等含義:
    He was not really interested in the film, you see.
    事實上,他對那部電影并不是真的感興趣。
    My leg isn't all right yet, you see, so I can't climb the hill with you.
    你知道/你看,我的腿還沒有完全好,所以我不能和你(們)一起爬山。
    (2)run可以指火車、公共汽車、船等“定時/定期行駛”、“(在兩地間)往來”:
    Buses run every ten minutes here.

    This ship runs between Dover and Calais.
