A "Career-Life" Crisis
In the new movie Up in the Air, Anna Kendrick stars opposite George Clooney as Natalie Keener, an ambitious new college graduate who takes a job at a company whose business is to fire people.
Natalie quickly gets to work developing a videoconferencing system that saves the company millions by performing terminations online. While on a cross-country trip to learn the rope, however, Natalie is shaken by the emotional implications of her prized job and quits.
These days, many people---young and old---are experiencing a career-life crisis, asking: "What do I do when I realize my dream job isn't so wonderful after all?"
Not long after Christine Hassler, 33 years old, of Los Angeles landed a prestigious and lucrative job as a Hollywood agent, she found herself arriving at work with knots in her stomach and counting the minutes until the weekend.
"I didn't like the job, and I didn't like the person I was becoming while doing it-stressed out, irritable and unmotivated," she says.
Recognize the Impact
Securing a position in your most desired field is a major achievement, and when the day-to-day work doesn't turn out to be as great as you thought it would be, it's normal to feel depressed, disappointed and confused.
You may feel powerless to make a decision, and this state of limbo can cause you to experience physical symptoms like insomnia, malaise and stomachaches.
Examine Expectations
The way to cope is first to examine your expectations. Says Ms. Hassler:"Often, the first few years at a job aren't the most thrilling because you're learning the ropes, and it may be unreasonable to think that you'll be jumping out of bed to go to work every day, or that you'll get promoted before you've had time to prove yourself."
Plan on the Sidelines
If you're certain that you've made a wrong turn not to get mired in feelings of negativity. "If you go to work every day with a woe-is-me attitude, you are going to feel even worse," says Ms. Hassler, who eventually left Hollywood to become a life coach and book author. She suggests talking about your feelings with a friend or mentor, but keeping your game face on at work.
Maintain your work reputation and in your free time you can start putting plans in place to transition your career. Begin researching positions that are a better fit for your skills and interests, start saving money, and attend networking activities in different industries so that you can get plugged into their communities.
Take the Pressure Off
And don't do anything rash. Although it's normal to make a career detour, it's also hard work, so you'll be well served to consider your next move carefully. Putting pressure on yourself to find the perfect career right now will not make it happen any faster, so remove the sense of urgency.
"Relax and spend some time getting to know yourself," says Ms. Hassler. "As we get a clearer picture of who we are, then what we want to do becomes easier to identify."

Most Women End Up Looking Like Their Mothers
There may be some truth to the saying that all women will eventually turn into their mothers, with a US study finding daughters age and wrinkle like their mothers.
Plastic surgeons used facial imaging and 3D computer modeling to study the aging process and found that daughter faces tend to follow their mothers in terms of sagging and volume loss, particularly around the corners of their eyes and lower eyelids.
"Studies of facial aging up to the present have largely been observational and subjective," the team from Loma Linda University Medical Center in California said in a report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
"This study applies state-of-the-art facial imaging and three-dimensional computer modeling to measure changes in the aging female face."
The study, presented at an ASPS conference in Seattle on the weekend, was based on examining 10 sets of similar looking mother-daughter pairs aged from 15 to 90 to measure changes in the aging female face.
Mothers and daughters have the same skeletal and cellular make up.
Researchers Matthew Camp, Zachary Filip, Wendy Wong and Subhas Gupta, all plastic surgeons in California, found that volume loss in the lower eyelid began when women were aged in their mid-30s and continued to progress steadily through life.
They said these findings may act as a further guideline for cosmetic rejuvenation of the eye region.
Eyelid surgery is one of the most common cosmetic procedures, used to get rid of crows' feet around the eyes and sagging to make the face appear younger.
ASPS figures show that it was the fourth most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2008.

All Humans Are "Aliens from Outer Space"
Humans are all aliens who came to earth from outer space, a leading British scientist has claimed. Prof Chandra Wickramasinghe, of Cardiff University, said new research "overwhelmingly" supported the view that human life started from outside our Earth.
The astrobiologist said the first "seeds of life" were deposited on our plant from space 3,800m years ago. He claimed microbes from outer space arrived on earth from comets, which then "multiplied and seeded" to form humam life.
He said his evidence, published in Cambridge University's International Journal 01 Astrobiology, showed humans, and all life on Earth, came from aliens brought to the earth by comets hitting the planet.
"Yes, we are all aliens-we share a cosmic ancestry," Prof Wickramasinghe said. "Each time a new planetary system forms a few surviving microbes find their way into comets seed other planets." He added: "We are thus part of a connected chain that extends over a large volume of the cosmos. Evidence is pointing inexorably in this direction."
Prof Wickramasinghe believes life is transferred from planet to planet over billions of years. He believes comets hit planets and pushed living matter out into space. He said some survived and got transferred to new planets over a timescale of millions and millions of years. But he accepts this model still does not explain how life actually began in the first place.
The professor and his late colleague Sir Fred Hoyle championed the so-calledd " panspermia" theory from the 1960s.
"Evidence from astronomy overwhelmingly supports the view that life did not start on Earth but was seeded from outside," Prof Wickramasinghe said. "Although we have no definite knowledge how life started in the first place, once started its spread in the cosmos and survival is inevitable."
"As we enter a new decade---the year 2010 - a clear pronouncement of our likely alien ancestry and of the existence of extraterrestrial life on a cosmic scale."
